Evaluating The Top Contenders: Which Solar Battery Is Best For UK Homeowners

Table of Contents

Solar power is becoming ever-popular with homeowners as an energy solution. It’s efficient, reliable, and sustainable, and the equipment is getting more advanced every year.

While solar panels alone can power your home for a good portion of the day, the addition of a solar battery can boost it. These batteries store excess power for you to use at night or in the event of an outage.

In a recent post, I talked about how to choose the right size solar battery for your needs. Once you’ve decided on that, you’ll then have a plethora of brands and manufacturers to choose from.

So, which is the best solar battery in the UK? Let’s find out.

Which Solar Battery Is Best For Your UK Home?

When it comes to buying a solar battery, you’re going to find that you have a decent range to choose from. However, there are two batteries that I personally think are better than others on the market.

There’s the SolarEdge 400v home battery which we favour for many reasons as well as the Tesla Powerwall battery that also has an excellent range of features.

SolarEdge 400v Home Battery

SolarEdge is an innovative company that offers everything you need for a solar panel system, including its 400v home battery.

If you have already had an installation from SolarEdge and are looking to upgrade then this is a fantastic option since the battery is designed to integrate seamlessly with their other equipment.

What’s more, each inverter is able to cope with several batteries so you can stack them and really make the most of the power that your system generates.

The SolarEdge 400v battery is designed for maximum efficiency; up to 94.5% as it happens. Not only this but the battery is also designed with safety in mind.

Your home is one of your most important assets and thanks to features like thermal protection, this is one of the first and only batteries to fully meet UK fire safety standards, meaning it can be installed indoors.

And speaking of installation, it couldn’t be easier. If you were ever worried that adding a solar battery would mean invasive work, think again.

The SolarEdge 400v home battery has a simple plug-and-play installation process and even comes with the option of a floor stand or wall mount. Once the battery is connected to the system, you can control everything from the palm of your hand thanks to the convenient smartphone app.

Tesla Powerwall

Tesla is a company that seems to have its fingers in every pie and solar batteries are no exception. With the expansive technological knowledge behind the minds of Tesla, it’s no wonder that their solar batteries are among some of the best.

The Powerwall battery has a 13.5kWh storage capacity so it is ideal for medium-sized homes and has a 90% efficiency. So, while it is slightly less powerful than the SolarEdge battery, you have to consider that it comes with 100% depth of discharge which means less chance of damage as the battery fully drains.

One of the things I love about the Powerwall battery is that it’s so smart. It’ll detect when there’s a power outage so you don’t need to rely as heavily on the grid. Like the SolarEdge battery, it also comes with a handy smartphone app, making it super easy to operate.

In terms of safety, you can rely on Tesla, and, just like SolarEdge, this battery meets all local safety regulations. Essentially this means it can be installed indoors or outdoors and will still deliver a safe and reliable performance.

One major downside, however, is that the SolarEdge battery can be self-installed but, as far as I can see, the Tesla battery requires professional installation. That said, there is currently an offer of a £350 rebate on every Powerwall battery purchased.

Which Should You Choose?

Both the SolarEdge and Tesla solar batteries have a lot to offer and, in terms of performance, they’re pretty much neck and neck.

However, the SolarEdge battery is much easier to install and a lot more affordable without compromising on efficiency. For this reason, I’m going to dub it as the best solar battery for UK homeowners.

In any case, I don’t think that the Tesla battery would in any way let you down and what it ultimately comes down to is personal preference.
